        SEASON 2016-17

For a second Saturday on the trot a player had to be taken by Ambulance to Hospital. This time it was the Wakehurst Strollers goalkeeper Dean Adams who sustained an injury when colliding with the goalpost. Dean was detained in Hospital on Saturday evening and everyone wishes him a quick recovery back to full fitness.

Saturday saw a mixed bag of results in the IFA Intermediate Cup 2nd Round Games. There were wins for Magherafelt Sky Blues and Newtowne while Desertmartin and Ballynure Old Boys lost out by a single goal each and Chimney Corner were beaten two nil.

The Limavady United v Wakehurst tie is now scheduled to be played on December 10th.

On the league front across all four divisions we were fortunate to only lose two games due to a wet pitch

This incoming week is a bog one for the League when we have Glebe Rangers in the Semi-final of the Steel and Sons Cup, Coagh United in the Semi-final f of the Bob Radcliffe Cup and Desertmartin in the Semi-final of the Craig Memorial Cup. It certainly would be a big coup for the league if all three teams were to win through to the Final of each competition.

COAGH UNITED                 2              SOFIA FARMER 0

Sofia who after losing their first game of the season went on a good run winning their next six league and cup games on the tort. Things have taken a turn for the worse as this was the fourth league and cup game they have lost on the trot. In a closely contested game Coagh went in at half-time leading by a goal scored by Matthew Kempton on the 40th minute. The second half was again a very tight affair then a goal on the 92rd minute settled the score in favour of Coagh at the end.                Referee Mr. Paul Doherty

                                                                IFA INTERMEDIATE CUP 2nd ROUND

SPORT & LEISURE SWIFTS          4              MAGHERAFELT SKY BLUES         5 (AET)

This was good away win for the Sky Blues who had to go to extra time after the teams shared eight goals in normal time. The Sky Blues went in front after Shane Heavron scored then saw the Sports equalise. The Sky Blues went in front for a second time after Anthony O’Neil scored but a converted penalty saw the Sports equalise before half-time. Tommy Beattie put the Sky Blues in front for a third time but back came the Sports to equalise. Shane Heavron scored his second goal putting the Sky Blues ahead for a fourth time but another converted penalty saw the Sports back level. Extra-time was then played with Anthony O’Neil scoring what proved to be the inner for the Sky Blues.

                                                DOLLINGSTOWN             0              NEWTOWNE       1

This was very closely contested game throughout the ninety minutes. As the game progressed it appeared the first goal in the game would be crucial and this how it turned out with Conor O’Hara scoring the winner for Newtowne on the 68th minute.

LISBURN DISTILLERY    1              BALLYNURE OB                0

There was really nothing between the teams in this game with the only goal being scored on the 42nd minute. Ballynure had a great chance to get level when awarded a penalty with 12 minutes left to play but were denied by the home keeper who made the save.

                                                MOSSLEY FC                      2              DESERTMARTIN               1

Mossley went on front early on then James Holmes equalised for Desertmartin. Half-time was almost reached when Mossley went in front again on the 44th minute. Desertmartin had the better of the play in the second half but could not get the elusive equaliser.

CHIMNEY CORNER                          0              BALLYMONEY UNITED   2

The old saying goes whoever takes their chances mostly wins the game and this was the case in point on Saturday. Ballymoney were more clinical around the goals than the Corner scoring twice through Mulligan and Scott on the 22nd and 37th minutes to win the tie.

COOKSTOWN RBL                          2              ANTRIM ROVERS             3

RBL to their credit never gave up getting a second goal when Gareth Ramsey scored on the 80th minute. RBL pushed for the equaliser after this but Antrim held firm until the final whistle.    Referee Mr. Bert Purdy

BRANTWOOD RES                          0              COOKSTOWN OLYMPIC               1Both teams played lots of good football but when it came to creating chances around the goals it was the defences that had the upper hand. The only goal in the game was scored by Michael Meenan after a good move by the Olympic on the 55th minute.              Referee Mr. Paul Aston

                                MALLUSK ATHLETIC                      0              SPORT & LEISURE S RES              1

Both teams played well on a very slick 3g surface but good clear chances were missing during the first-half resulting in no goals being scored at half-time. Things changed early in the second half with Neil Johnston scoring on the 50th minute that at the end won the points for the Sports.             Referee Mr. Lee Patterson

                                FC WHITEABBEY                              1              WOODLANDS    5

Woodlands are still unbeaten this term in the league and sit proudly at the top of the table. Woodland went into a two goal lead with goals scored by Ross Oliver and Stephen Grant. As half-time was approaching Whiteabbey pulled a goal back when Conor Mullen scored reducing the deficit at the Interval? Woodlands pushed forward in the second half going on to score three more goals through Ross Oliver, Ray Hammond and Alex Haggan to claim all three points.           Referee Mr. Richard Stewart

COOKSTOWN YOUTH                    1              RATHCOOLE FC               1

There was nothing to choose between the teams in this game with them sharing the points at the end. Rathcoole took the lead after Ross Blair scored on the 35th minute putting them in front at half-time. The Youth hit back early in the second half with Mark Megarry scoring the equaliser on the 55th minute. After this both teams had chances to score but none were taken.           Referee Mr. Gary Crawford

COOKSTOWN RBL RES 2              BALLYNURE OB ‘B’         7

                                1st CARRICKFERGUS OB                0              WHITEHEAD RANGERS  3

The Old Boys tried hard to get back into the game but could not get the elusive goal then on the 91st minute Stuart Lyttle completed the scoring for the Rangers.
