        SEASON 2016-17


All games were played as planned on Saturday with a mixture of League and Cup games. On the Intermediate Division Sofia Farmer with a strong away win over Dunloy have moved into the runners-up spot a point behind Wakehurst. How things have changed this season for Sofia who are being coached superbly by Ricardo Monsanto.    

In the Junior Division One there has been good a improvement from a number of teams since last season such as Cookstown RBL, Woodlands and Rathcoole FC with Last season winners Newington YC Res keeping pace with them.


The Sympathy of everyone connected to the league is extended to the Red Star stalwart John Hewitt and his Family of on the Death of Johns Mother.

Bothe teams kept it very tight at the back from the start resulting in no goals being scored before half-time. Things changed in the second half with Elton Carvglho scoring for Sofia on the 46th minute. Dunloy replied to this with Carl Fitzpatrick scoring the equaliser on the 53rd minute. Sofia went in front for a second time after Elton Carvglho scored his second goal in the game on the 65th minute. Sofia then upped the pace of the game after this scoring four goals in a twenty minute spell, Nuno Colace scoring on the 70th minute followed by Timmy Sanca on the 78th, Nuno Colace 81st and Timmy Sanca on the 88th minutes to collect all three points at the end. After a steady start by both teams Ian Christie score putting Glebe in front on the 19th minute then an own goal conceded by the Corner on the 25th minute saw Glebe go two goals clear. Half-time saw the two goals still separate the teams then on the 72nd minute the Corner were awarded a penalty which was converted by Rene Matiko. The Corner then went chasing the equaliser but got caught giving away a free kick on the 83rd minute which saw Ian Christie score his second goal in the game sealing the win for Glebe.             Referee Mr. David Moore

There were quite a few chances created by both teams in the first-half but the scoreline was still blank at half-time. Chances continued to come and go with no goals being scored until Andy Laughlin scored for Wakehurst on the 65th minute. Desertmartin had to chase the game after this and Wakehurst used this hitting then on the break with Zac Barr scoring on the 85th minute ensuring the win for Wakehurst.                Referee Mr. Gerard Murray

                                                                      CRAWFORD CUP 1st ROUND

                                FC WHITEABBEY                              1              NEWINGTON YC RES          4

Newington went in front with an early goal scored by Gary Doherty on the 8th minute but were then held by Whiteabbey until the 41st minute when Michael McArdle scored their second goal. Whiteabbey tried hard to get back into the game but got hit by two quick goal scored by Daniel Kelly on the 69th and 71st minute extending the Newington lead to four goals. Whiteabbey to their credit never gave up getting a goal back after Ryan O’Neil scored on the 85th minute.          Referee Mr. Charlie Pollock

                                COOKSTOWN OLYMPIC               5              MALLUSK ATHLETIC          0

The Olympic went in front on the 14th minute through a goal scored by Aiden Doyle but had to wait until the 43rd minute for their second goal that was scored by James McGahan. The Olympic had the better of the attacking play during the second half and a hat-trick scored by Substitute Jon Gilmore on the 67th, 76th and 88th minutes saw them progress to the next round.

The Sky Blues went in front after Ciaran Monaghan scored on the 17th minute then doubled their advantage after Chris Brady scored on the 32nd minute. Half-time was almost reached when Billy Dorans pulled goal back for Newtowne on the 43rd minute. Newtowne were then awarded a penalty on the 51st minute resulting in Richard King scoring after the ball came back off the keeper. Newtowne went in front after Declan Logue scored on the 58th minute then the Sky Blues got back level after Emmett McGuckin scored on the 60th minute. Conor Logue put Newtowne back in front on the 70th minute then the Sky Blues had a man sent off on the 80th minute. Gary Moore scored number five for Newtowne on the 85th minute but back came the Sky Blues with Ciaran Monaghan scoring a fourth goal on the 88th minute but could not force the equaliser before the final whistle.

Good clear scoring chances had to be worked for in this game and as a result of this only one goal was scored in the first-half by Curtis Dempster on the 37th minute putting Brantwood in front at the break. The game continued in a similar fashion in the second half until Pedro Delgado scored the equaliser for Ballynure on the 66th minute. This opened the game up with Ballynure taking the lead on the 72nd minute after Robert Watson scored. Brantwood went all-out for the equaliser after this but Ballynure held out for the win.                       Referee Mr. Adam McKnight

The Sports went in front after James Larkin scored on the 10th minute then a brace of goals scored by Gareth McAuley on the 17th and 41st minutes saw Brantwood in front at half-time. The Sports got back on level terms after Gerard McCann scored on the 65th minute. After this both teams went for goals which went the way of Brantwood with Ryan Hill scoring on the 70th minute and Gareth McAuley completing his hat-trick on the 88th minute.                Referee Mr. Paul Aston

                                RATHCOOLE FC                               5              ANTRIM ROVERS             4

What a game Rathcoole taking a four mil lead then the Rovers pulling the score back to four all before and injury time goal won the game for Rathcoole. Rathcoole were on the score sheet early with goals scored by Aaron Lindsay, Nathan Stranaghan and Darren Cosby on the 3rd, 6th and 12th minutes which saw them lead three nil at half-time. This lead became four after Ross Watters scored on the 50th minute. The Rovers got two goals back with Darren Adair and Charlie O’Grady scoring on the 53rd and 55th minutes. The Rovers got back on level terms with goals scored by Darren Adair and Thomas Bownes on the 74th and 75th minute setting the game up for a grandstand finish. The game then went into stoppage time when Rathcoole got the winner on the 92nd minute scored by Ryan Caskey.       Referee Mr. Gary Crawford.

Woodlands have had a very good start to the season and went in front after Alex Haggan scored on the 10th minute. Two more goals followed scored by Jonny McFetridge and Alex Haggan on the 16th and 23rd minutes. Jonny McFetridge scored his second goal in the game on the 32nd minute putting Woodlands four goals clear at half-time. Alex Haggan completed his hat-trick on the 55th minute then late in the game Ross Oliver scored number six for Woodlands on the 85th minute.

This was a fairly even game with the result being decided by the odd goal in three. Half-time saw Cookstown lead by a goal scored by Stuart Donaghy then early in the second half Charles Allen scored the equaliser for Wakehurst. Roth teams went for the winner after this with Eddie Davis scoring the all important third goal in the game for RBL.        Referee Mr. Richard Stewart

This was a typical derby game with both teams going all-out to win the Sunday Morning bragging rights. Chances came and went for both teams during the first-half but the only goal scored by Steven Howe which saw 3rd Ballyclare in front at half-time. Ballynure came back in the second half with a brace of goals scored by Jonny McCrea to take the lead which was improved upon when Jonny Kane scored their third goal ensuring the win at the final whistle.       Referee Mr. Trevor Higgins



                                18th NEWTOWNABBEY III              3              RED STAR           3

Red Star went in front after Ricky McNally scored on the 7th minute then saw Andrew Perry score the equaliser for Newtownabbey. Tyrell Costello scored on the 30th minute putting Newtownabbey back in front then scored his second goal in the game just before half-time. Newtownabbey defended their advantage until Matthew McFaul scored number two for Red Star on the 81st minute this being followed by the equaliser scored by Noel O’Connor on the 88th minute.         Referee Mr. Bert Purdy

Both teams had a few chances to score in teh first-half but only one of these was taken by Rian Humphreys who scored putting 68th in front at half-time. Chances came and went in the second half with only one goal being scored this time by Matthew Wilson on the 74th minute that saw the teams share the points at the end.      Referee Mr. Brian Leitch

The result of this game was decided by an early goal and a very late one. The Youth went in front on the 3rd minute through a goal scored by Ally Young. This goal still separated the teams at half-time and was still the difference when play went into stoppage time at the end of the second half. RBL had to take chances to get back into the game and with the game in the 92nd minute Philip McGarvey scored the all important second goal for the Youth to claim a place in the next round.    Referee Mr. Russell Wilson


                                                LINDA WELSHMAN MEMORIAL CUP 1st ROUND

                                1st CARRICKFERGUS OB                                BALLYCLARE NORTH END

1st Carrickfergus went into this game with three league wins from three games played against North End who had only one point from three league games played. Both teams kept it very tight during the opening half-hour then on the 35th minute Carrickfergus conceded an own goal that saw North End in front. North End then went two goals in front on the 37th minute with a goal scored by Eddie Cochrane and went on to defend this two goal advantage until the final whistle. Referee Mr. Rodney Campbell

Remo got off to a quick start in this game with James Brown heading them in front on the 9th minute but from then on they were held by Whitehead until half-time. Remo made a quick start in the second half with Jon Fox seeing his penalty saved followed up to score from the re-bound on the 48th minute. Remo went on to seal the win after Niall Stewart scored their third goal on the 56th minute.                Referee Mr. Russell Kennedy

                                CARNLOUGH SWIFTS                    7              MOUNTAINVIEW              6      (After Pens)

It took a penalty kick shoot-out to decide the result after the teams shared four goals during play. No goals were scored during normal time then extra-time was played. Mountainview went on front after Phil Rogers scored then Andrew Hastings equalised for Carnlough. Billy Brown scored to put Mountainview back in front then Carnlough replied with Alexander Johnston scoring to take the game to penalties which Carnlough win by Five goals to Four.      Referee Mr, Kenny Bigger

It was a very late extra-time goal that decided they result of this game with the winner being scored with only a couple of minutes left to play. Clough went in front after Alistair McDonald scored then saw Josh Graham and Nathan Coyle score to put the Swifts into the lead. Normal time was running out when Richard Ross equalised for Clough taking the game to extra-time. No goals were scored during the first period and with penalties looming Gary Wilkinson scored the winning goal for the Swifts.

Castle had control of this game from the start and led by six goals to one at half-time. Though 68th conceded four more goal in the second half they also got on the score sheet a couple of times. Goals in the game were scored by Dean Meneely (4), Lloyd Watters (2), Warren Brown, Paul Garvey and Andy Hall for Castle and Eddie Bell, Ian Irvine and Mark McLarnon for 68th.
